What the Bible actually says
Every close relationship quietly runs on one of two engines. A consumer relationship stays only while needs are met and the terms stay favorable; a covenant binds two people to each other's good — for better, for worse. Scripture calls marriage a covenant that mirrors Christ's own: he did not love us because we were lovely, he loved us into loveliness.
